Two Eids for Muslims
Viewers, Muslims celebrate two Eids in a year: one is called Eid al-Fitr and the other is called Eid al-Adha or Eid Qurbani.
Eid al-Adha and Hajj
The 10th of Dhul-Hijjah is the day on which Eid al-Adha is celebrated. Muslims also do the Hajj on this day. The date of Eid al-Adha is Dhul-Hijjah 10. Since the Prophet (peace be upon him) claimed that the Day of Arafah was the day of deliverance from the Fire, standing at Arafah on that day completes the Hajj and is a major pillar of the Hajj.
The Act of Sacrifice
Every year on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, Muslims offer sacrificial animals following the Sunnah of Ibrahim. Sacrifice is called Qurbani. It is attributed to Hazrat Ismail (peace be upon him).
Mention of Hazrat Ismail (AS)
When he was still a child, Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) left him and his mother Hazrat Hajrah in a barren and desolate land which is known as Makkah al-Mukarramah and is the Qibla of the Islamic world.

Dream Interpretation and Sacrifice
One day Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) said to Hazrat Ismail (AS) that he saw in a dream that he was sacrificing him. Hazrat Ismail (AS) said that you will find me patient. When Ibrahim (AS) laid Hazrat Ismail (AS) down to sacrifice him, a voice came from Allah:
“O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled your dream. We reward those who do good, and We provided a great sacrifice in his place.”
History and Lessons of Sacrifice
Story of the Sons of Adam
The Lord of the worlds pointed toward the act of sacrifice in the story of the sons of Adam, and many beneficial lessons can be learned from this event. O Prophet, recite to them the true story of the two sons of Adam in Islam: when they both offered a sacrifice and one’s sacrifice was accepted and the other’s was not. The latter said: “I will kill you.” The former replied: “What is my fault? Allah only accepts the deeds of the righteous.”
The Law of Sacrifice
Although the act of sacrifice started from the sons of Adam, it did not end with them.
Testimony of the Holy Qur’an
For example, the following verses mention the practice of sacrifice among previous nations. The Holy Qur’an refers to it in Surah Al-Hajj verses 34 and 67:
“And for every nation, We have appointed a ritual of sacrifice so that they may mention the name of Allah over the livestock He has provided for them. Your God is One God, so submit to Him.”
Misconception About Child Sacrifice
According to the Qur’an, some nations used to sacrifice and slaughter their children. Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) proceeded to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismail (AS) to abolish this practice, but instead of Ismail, a ram was sacrificed.
Dream Interpretation and Success
The Holy Qur’an states:
“And when he reached the age where he could run with him, Ibrahim said: ‘O my son, I see in a dream that I am slaughtering you, so tell me what you think.’
He replied: ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. God willing, you will find me among the patient.’
And when they both submitted and Ibrahim laid him down on his forehead, We called out: ‘O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled your dream.’
Indeed, We reward those who do good.
Verily, this was a manifest trial.
And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”
