The 10th day of Muharram (Ashura) is a very special day. It is a time for deep thinking, sadness, and remembering how God saved His good people. This day connects two big events in history. These events teach us about truth, faith, and freedom.

The Tragedy of Karbala

For all Muslims, especially for the Shia community, the Day of Ashura is a day of great sadness and respect. This day makes us remember the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (Alayhi Salam). He was the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

In the Islamic year 61 AH (680 AD), Imam Hussain (AS) stood up against a bad and cruel ruler named Yazid. Yazid was forcing people to follow his wrong rules. But Imam Hussain (AS) refused to accept him. He, along with his small family and loyal friends, went to the desert of Karbala.

They had no water or food for days under the hot sun. In the end, Imam Hussain (AS) and his 72 companions were killed brutally because they chose the truth and refused to bow down to a bad king. This big sacrifice is a global lesson. It teaches the whole world to stand up against bad people, fight for justice, and keep strong faith in God.

The Deliverance of Prophet Musa (Alayhi Salam)

Long before the event of Karbala, the Day of Ashura was already a holy day. This is the historic day when Allah saved Prophet Musa (Alayhi Salam) (Moses) and his people (the Children of Israel) from a big danger.

The cruel king of Egypt, Pharaoh (Firaun), was chasing them with a huge army to kill them. Prophet Musa (AS) and his people reached the Red Sea. They had nowhere to hide. At that scary moment, Allah showed a big miracle. He ordered the sea to open up into two parts. A dry path appeared in the middle of the water. Prophet Musa (AS) and his people walked across safely. When Pharaoh and his bad army tried to follow them, Allah closed the water. Pharaoh and his army drowned in the sea. This day teaches us that God always saves those who follow the truth.

The Blessings of Fasting (Roza)

Fasting in the month of Muharram has very big rewards. Islamic teachings tell us that after the compulsory fasts of Ramadan, the best fasts are the ones we keep in Muharram.

There is a beautiful saying (Hadith) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) about this month:

“The best fasting after the month of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, Muharram.”

This means keeping fasts in this month brings a person very close to Allah and brings peace to life.

To follow the tradition correctly, Muslims usually keep two fasts. They fast either on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, or on the 10th and 11th of Muharram.
