Causes of Irregular or Scanty Periods
Introduction
Assalam o Alaikum, I am Dr. Zainab and I have been associated with the field of gynecology for the past twelve years. I am a consultant gynecologist and infertility expert. Today’s topic is about a very common question asked by women: why are periods very scanty, irregular, or Periods ka ruk ruk ke aana only show spotting? Let’s go into the details of this topic.
Physiological Causes
Childhood and Immature Hormonal System
Some girls, when their periods start, have hormones that are not yet fully active, and their reproductive system is not mature. This causes irregular periods (Periods ka ruk ruk ke aana) that may come after two to three months, and often only light spotting occurs. This is a natural condition. With age, after six months to a year, as the system matures and hormones stabilize, periods automatically become normal.

Perimenopause
From the age of 45 to 55, a few years before menopause, hormone levels start to decline. As a result, periods become irregular (Periods ka ruk ruk ke aana), occur after two to three months, and are very light. This is also a natural condition and does not usually require treatment.
Nutritional Deficiencies and Weight Changes
Nutritional deficiencies or anemia can also be major reasons. Women who suddenly start dieting, lose weight, or especially lose fat experience irregular (Periods ka ruk ruk ke aana) and scanty periods because hormones are fat-based. Similarly, sudden weight gain can also cause irregular and scanty periods.
Pathological Causes
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
This is the most common condition in which hormones become completely imbalanced, weight increases, and periods become very light or delayed for two to three months. Many women only get periods with medication. Proper treatment from a gynecologist, along with diet and exercise, is essential. A healthy lifestyle plays an important role in regulating periods.
Inactive Lifestyle
Professional women, such as office workers or those in banks who sit for long hours, often experience irregular periods. Therefore, an active lifestyle is necessary. Morning walks, exercise, yoga, or meditation should be part of daily life.
Medical Tests and Hormonal Issues
- Complete blood test to check for anemia
- Clotting profile
- Thyroid test, as imbalance in thyroid levels can cause periods to become too light or too heavy
- Prolactin level test, since high prolactin (other than during breastfeeding) can stop periods. Stress or certain tumors can also increase prolactin levels.

Metabolic Diseases
Hypertension and Endometrial Thickness
Long-term high blood pressure can cause the uterine wall to become thick (endometrial thickness). This results in periods stopping for months, and then when they occur, they are very heavy. Controlling blood pressure helps in regulating periods.
Treatment and Precautions
- Consult your gynecologist for proper diagnosis
- Get relevant tests such as ultrasound to check pelvic structure
- Change lifestyle, adopt exercise, and eat a healthy diet
- Remember: more than 70% of period problems can be solved by lifestyle changes, exercise, and healthy eating
